You may have read a news story about 41 young girls in Guatemala who burned to death in a group home for troubled kids.
Apparently one girl lit a match thinking that she was starting a small fire to get the attention of the staff to protest all of them being locked in their rooms. The fire got out of hand. The unfortunate part was there was a nine minute time period where the staff and government officials negotiated on the phone what they wanted to do.
In in the meantime, the fire burned out of control.
The girls died.
This memorial on the city center square is in honor of the ninas.
It was heartbreaking walking past. I stopped and read some of the names of young ones taken so senselessly. Others were quietly paying respect, too.
